Being in the Form of a QuestAn orthodox Catholic exploring what it means to live authentically in a world very different to that of my ancestors and, yet, still pretty much the same. My take is that we do this by falling for the illusion of being something more than we are in our own right and by our own light. Just An Amateur--Film Criticism For Those Who Know No Better Unlike the majority of websites writing on anything, I am writing about things of which I openly admit I have little to no formal knowledge. I am merely keeping a blog to get my thoughts out in the open so they don\'t just sit on my hard drive and rot. I can\'t really say I have a formal philosophy of how to critique film, because I don\'t--I\'m learning as I go, because I\'ve found that the only way I ever learned how to do things was to actually do them. I don\'t even feel very comfortable saying which films or directors are the best in my opinion, because there\'s so much I haven\'t seen yet, although I do have my likes (Hitchcock, Chaplin, Kurosawa) and dislikes (Fellini). Why read this then? Well, as was said in Kurosawa\'s SEVEN SAMURAI, \"Sometimes the greatest friendship comes through a chance meeting.\" That made a lot of sense when I wrote it, but it doesn\'t seem to anymore so you\'ll have to unravel it. You\'ll see all kinds of movie reviews here--short ones and very long ones like the one I\'m now preparing on Chaplin\'s CITY LIGHTS, on old movies, new movies, short movies, long movies, hard-to-find classics, rental store crap; basically whatever I can see. It\'s not a commentary on \"what\'s out in theatres\" or a news site on film. It won\'t be updated regularly at times so don\'t expect it to be. A few quickies about me now that you have the germ of the website: *I go to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana--the one with a golden dome and Charlie Weis. *My day job is being an electrical engineering student and making sure my friends stay out of trouble whilst drinking. (The word \"occasional\" is quite accurate--when I\'m not on break, posting will be slim to none, although I write a lot so you\'ll have plenty to read even then). I want to go to law school after I\'m through at ND. *I\'m from Fresno, CA, a cinematic backwater if ever one existed, and both of my parents are totally uninterested in most of the films I like. One of them is highly skeptical that anything good has come of screens ever. *I\'m a jazz musician (saxophones). *I\'m an orthodox Catholic. *I\'m politically, socially, and culturally conservative (these last two bullets have nasty habits of showing up in my film reviews every once in a while in commentary relating what\'s going on in the movies to \"what\'s wrong with the world\" in my opinion. OK, so it\'s not nasty, but it is there so be forewarned). *I\'ve tried blogs before with little to no success. I\'m just admitting this time that it won\'t be updated regularly and living with it, and it\'s not the kind of thing where people expect a post every day anyway. *I\'m an introvert whom everyone says is an extrovert. *My glasses make me look like Rivers Cuomo, the frontman for the band Weezer

Living CatholicismPersonal thoughts and practical advice on living out your Catholic faith in a busy world.
Logres“Logres” is a name for Arthurian Britain, but it was also used by C.S. Lewis in That Hideous Strength to refer to a small company committed to combatting the forces of evil, and preserving the good and the beautiful. More broadly in Lewis’s work, “Logres” represents the “true Britain,” the latent ideal towards which Britain has been striving since the beginning of its history. My goal is to discover and revel in the signs that our own struggling Logres is slowly coming to fruition as the Lord puts his long-awaited plan into effect. We aren’t at the helm of the bark of Peter. The Holy Spirit is unceasingly at work, renewing and inspiring. Evidence of this can be seen everywhere, especially in the minds and hearts of a new generation of Catholic laity, the “revolution of fidelity.” Most young Catholics of today have been brought up on a diet of spiritual drivel, but have since become disillusioned. They realize that “sharing”, “being nice,” “diversity,” and “having an open mind” aren’t enough to satisfy the longings they feel. They see the hypocrisy of those who claim to be Catholic but reject the traditions and teachings of the Church. They see examples of whole personhood, not in the people usually held up as examples of a successful life, but in those who embrace a life of self-sacrifice and commitment to truth. Consequently, when the Truth is presented to them, pure, unadulterated, and potent, they recognize and embrace it, and many are doing just that. I’m specifically interested in the evangelization of society through the artistic and literary imagination. I dabble in almost every artistic field, particularly traditional Scottish and Irish music, and some scribbling of poetry and fiction. I’ve also been very involved in theatre in the past, and was pursuing a professional career for a while. Now that I’ve shifted over to academics, I’m interested in exploring the philosophy of creativity, especially seen in the light of the sacramental. I’m just beginning to explore the amazing work of the ressourcement theologians in this area, and would also like to incorporate the thinking of Tolkien and Lewis on the True Myth and sub-creation. Of course, don’t expect this blog to be over-scholarly, and especially don’t expect politics. Do expect some musing on university life, some thoughts on theatre, music, and literature, and the experiences of a young Catholic in the life of the Church. Also expect some quotes in various dead languages, some excursions into the strange and whimsical, and lots of obscure references to bagpipes, ping-pong, and free chocolate. After all, von Balthasar says that “…the Catholic form guarantees the miraculous quality of being, the freedom, the sense of being a child, of adventure, the resilient, energizing paradox of existence…” In Him, Therese
Love The Life You ChooseThe Incarnationalist Blog - Incarnationalism, as I'm using the term, is an aesthetic/artistic philosophy which can be summed up as "the supernatural intruding on the natural," and "the supernaturality of the natural." Essentially, we reject the nihilism of the world that says that nothing counts or even that something doesn't count. We reject coincidence, pointlessness, and apathy. We revel in the world and thank God for its existence. This blog will try to take an Incarnationalist perspective on things, which is inevitably a Catholic perspective.

Roseanne T. Sullivan\'s BlogThis will do as a description from my first blog in December, 2003: I want to have a place to record the things I do and read and think and learn each day. So this is it. I picked blogspot.com because a blog in http://stealinghome.blogspot.com cracked me up. I came across the blog in a google search for RCIA. The posting was about an RCIA class the blogger, Jaclyn, was attending. (Rite of Christian Iniation classes are how converts get taught about the Church.) Jaclyn wrote about a cheerleader who got a funny expression on her face when she found out that the Catholic Church teaches that sex outside of marriage is wrong. The poor girl apparently didn\'t know whether she wanted to join a Church like that! One thing that drives many people away is that the Church is counter-cultural. And sexual self-control is not even considered healthy in the culture of today. ...
